TM Pulls the Plug on Streamyx: Upgrade to Unifi or Lose Your Connection!

In a move that’s been long anticipated, Telekom Malaysia (TM) has officially announced the discontinuation of its Streamyx services, effective February 28, 2025. This marks the end of an era for the once-popular copper-based DSL service, which has been a staple for many Malaysians since its launch in 2001.
The End of an Era
Streamyx, which was rebranded as Unifi Lite in 2019, offered download speeds of up to 8Mbps and upload speeds of 512kbps. While these speeds were revolutionary at the time, they have become obsolete in today’s high-speed internet age. With the advent of 4G and 5G technologies, as well as the widespread availability of fibre broadband, Streamyx has struggled to keep up.
The Migration to Unifi
TM has urged all Streamyx and Unifi Lite customers to migrate to its fibre-based Unifi broadband services before the February 28 deadline. This migration is part of TM’s broader plan to phase out its legacy copper network and upgrade to faster, more reliable fibre internet in line with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s (MCMC) directive.
How to Migrate
Customers can initiate the migration process through the Unifi Selfcare Portal or the MyUnifi app. Alternatively, they can visit a Unifi Store or TMpoint for assistance1. TM has assured customers that their current speeds and monthly fees will remain unchanged after the migration. However, the installation time may vary depending on the availability of fibre infrastructure in their area.
For those in areas with existing fibre infrastructure, the migration process is expected to be completed within 14 business days. However, for locations without fibre infrastructure, it may take anywhere from 30 to 180 business days. TM has also introduced Unifi Air 5G as an alternative for customers in areas where fibre infrastructure is not yet available.
The Benefits of Fibre Broadband
Fibre broadband offers numerous advantages over copper-based DSL, including faster speeds, better reliability, and improved overall performance. With speeds starting at 100Mbps for less than RM100 per month, Unifi broadband is a cost-effective and efficient solution for modern internet users.
The Impact on Customers
The discontinuation of Streamyx will affect approximately 24,000 remaining Streamyx customers as of Q2 2024. TM has emphasized the importance of migrating to Unifi broadband to ensure uninterrupted internet connectivity. Failure to do so will result in the termination of Streamyx services after the February 28 deadline.
Looking Ahead
As TM continues to expand its fibre broadband network across Malaysia, the migration to Unifi is expected to be completed by March 2025. This transition represents a significant step towards providing faster and more reliable internet services to all Malaysians.
Conclusion
The discontinuation of Streamyx is a necessary step in the evolution of Malaysia’s internet infrastructure. While it may be a bittersweet farewell for some, the move to fibre broadband promises a brighter, faster future for internet users across the country. So, if you’re still on Streamyx, now is the time to make the switch and enjoy the benefits of modern, high-speed internet.
