Perodua’s Affordable EV Set to Revolutionize the Market!
Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) has unveiled exciting details about its first electric vehicle (EV), including potential price tag. President and CEO Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad revealed that the EV will be priced between RM50,000 and RM100,000, aiming to make it accessible for consumers.
However, the EV won’t be hitting the Malaysian potholes just yet. Zainal emphasized the importance of establishing a robust EV ecosystem before launching the model. Key considerations include setting a second-hand value pricing mechanism, ensuring safety, addressing range anxiety, and implementing battery recycling solutions, in other words, pasti selamat.

The announcement coincided with the public debut of Perodua’s Electric Motion Online (emo-1) model at the Malaysia Autoshow 2024 at MAEPS, Serdang. This concept EV project, which started in September 2022, is a collaboration with Australian company EV North and local universities such as UPM, UniKL, and Uniten.
According to current specifications, the emo-1 model features an AC permanent magnet synchronous electric motor and a 55.7 kWh Prismatic Li-Ion Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) HV battery pack. The motor delivers a peak power of 120 kW, a rated power of 50 kW, a maximum torque of 220 Nm, and a driving range of 350 km.
Perodua noted that these specifications may change in the final product, which is expected to launch either later this year or next year.
